THE EVOLUTION OF TECHNOLOGICAL TRENDS

Smartphones, tablets, and computers run our lives these days. In very little time technology has exploded in the market and now, many people cannot imagine a life without it. To understand how we got from back in the dark ages to where we are today, it is important to understand how technology evolves. All technologies are born out of purpose. For example, search engines were created to sort through the massive amounts of data online. With each new upgrade technology compounds existing technologies to create something better than what was previously used before. The more this happens, the more technology evolves to become the essential thing it is today. As ideas get compounded to form new technologies, these new technologies are set up to become components of future new technologies, and so on, and so forth. Existing technologies evolve into something far more powerful and greater than we had before.

Section 4 B: Applications and Implications

No.8- Vanessa Ettienne and Arella Cyrus

Many people use standard application software and data communication as tools to carry out processes in the workplace. ICT has a great impact on job skills in careers. Here are some examples:

  • In the Office
  • Word processing and document preparations are done.
  • They communicate with clients and business partners via email, telephone and fax.
  • Basic hardware and software troubleshooting is also required as employees
  • Copies of documents are made with a photocopier

As documents are now being store electronically on the computers, the environment benefits as less trees are required to be cut down.

  • As Teachers:
  • They learn how to prepare word documents, spreadsheets and presentations and do data management.
  • They also should be able to install and do basic hardware and software troubleshooting.

Because of technology, students are able to learn more efficiently as they are introduced to new ways of learning.

  • As a Mass Media Personnel:
  • They prepare articles and news scripts
  • Communication (with the world) is done via email, fax and forums
  • They are required to use both hardware and software to make films and do sound editing before presenting to the final presd

Electronic publishing is a cheaper way to create magazines and books which can be read over the Internet using hand-held devices, such as e-readers (electronic readers) or a regular smartphone.

  • In the Movie Industry:
  • Documents for movie scripts are created
  • Animations are done using special software
  • Accounting is done using budgeting software to establish the cost and income estimates for movies

Sometimes you may not notice or realise that the image or clip that you see in movies or shows are not live action but instead has been created with a graphics package.

  • Law enforcement personnel:
  • Document preparation is required to file case reports and letters
  • Database management skills are also necessary for searching and accessing records

Necessary for searching and accessing records of both criminals and ordinary citizens, which they can refer to to solve crimes. Criminal records may also hold bio-metric data such as fingerprints and DNA readings (but probably not in Trinidad).

  • Musician:
  • Ability to use MIDI hardware is essential- to produce music and lyrics as well as using the computer to add instruments, sound, special effects, etc.

Nowadays, music is created using computers to manipulate and alter the singer's voice, add sound effects, etc.

Medical Personnel:

Engineering:

Systems such as CADD, CAE AND CAM  may be used to design, test and create products.

Loss of Jobs:

Retraining:

Nowadays, it is common to see computers in schools which can be used to help students develop computer skills. However, long ago, when your parents and grandparents were in school, they did not have access to computers there.

As jobs are changing, new skills are required at the workplace, therefore, people need to be re-trained.

There are online courses available that can help people develop computer skills, while others can learn on the job.
